Spotify Hits Record 751M Users: The “Wrapped” Effect – Ankor Tech
Spread the love

Spotify reached a historic milestone in the fourth quarter, surging to 751 million monthly active users. This 11% year-over-year growth was primarily fueled by the viral success of the annual “Wrapped” campaign and strategic enhancements to the platform’s free-tier offerings.

Record Growth and Revenue Milestones

The streaming giant added 38 million net new users during the final quarter of the year. Alongside this expansion, the number of premium subscribers climbed by 10%, reaching a total of 290 million. Financial results mirrored this user growth, with revenue hitting €4.53 billion ($5.39 billion)—a 7% increase compared to the previous year—driven largely by an 8% boost in subscription income.

While the ad-supported segment saw a slight 4% dip to €518 million, the company’s gross margin reached a record high of 33.1%. This 83-basis-point improvement underscores Spotify’s successful push into monetizing podcasts and music advertising.

The “Wrapped” Engine

The “Wrapped” campaign remains a dominant force in Spotify’s retention and acquisition strategy. Last year, the feature engaged over 300 million users and generated 630 million social media shares across 56 different languages, cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon that drives platform activity.

Strategic Evolution Under New Leadership

As co-CEOs Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström assume control from co-founder Daniel Ek, they inherit a platform that has transformed far beyond its origins as a music-only service. Spotify now operates a diverse ecosystem including:

  • Podcasts and audiobooks
  • Integrated music videos and video podcasts
  • Social features like group chats
  • Concert ticketing and music history insights

Betting on AI and Profitability

Profitability remains the core objective for the executive team. To achieve this, the company has implemented price hikes in the U.S. and Europe while simultaneously upgrading its free, ad-supported tier to fend off competition from YouTube Music and Amazon Music. Users can now enjoy more control, including the ability to search for specific songs and exclude tracks from recommendation algorithms.

Furthermore, the platform has integrated advanced AI capabilities, such as the AI DJ and AI-generated playlists, to deepen user engagement. Looking ahead, Spotify projects continued momentum, forecasting a total of 759 million monthly users and 293 million paying subscribers for the current quarter.
