Google has officially expanded its “Canvas in AI Mode” feature to all users across the United States. Following a successful run as a Google Labs experiment last year, the tool is now available in English to anyone utilizing AI Mode within Google Search, as confirmed by the company in a recent blog post.

The rollout marks a significant move to integrate advanced generative AI directly into the world’s most popular search engine, allowing users to draft documents, organize complex projects, and create custom tools without leaving the search interface.

Advanced Capabilities and Project Management

Canvas is designed to handle sophisticated workflows that go beyond standard search queries. Users can, for instance, upload class notes to generate comprehensive study guides or transform dense research reports into web pages, interactive quizzes, or audio overviews—a capability that draws parallels to Google’s research-focused tool, Notebook LM.

Beyond information synthesis, the tool empowers users to turn creative concepts into reality. By simply describing an idea, users can trigger the generation of functional code to build shareable applications or games. Furthermore, it serves as an interactive editor for creative writing, providing real-time feedback and draft refinements.

How to Access and Use Canvas

To access the feature, users must be in AI Mode and select the new Canvas option from the tool menu (indicated by the “+” icon). Once activated, a side panel opens, allowing users to synthesize information from the web and Google’s Knowledge Graph.

For developers or those experimenting with code, the interface provides a dual-view: users can test the functionality of their prototype while simultaneously toggling to view and refine the underlying code through direct dialogue with Gemini.

Competitive Positioning in the AI Market

Google’s decision to integrate Canvas into the main Search experience highlights its primary strategic advantage: the ability to place cutting-edge AI directly in front of billions of users. While Canvas is already a staple for Gemini subscribers—who benefit from the Gemini 3 model and a massive 1-million-token context window—this expansion brings the technology to a much broader audience.

The feature enters a competitive landscape dominated by similar offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic. However, the user experience differs slightly; while ChatGPT’s Canvas triggers automatically based on specific queries, Google’s implementation requires a more intentional, manual interaction, similar to the approach taken by Anthropic’s Claude.
