Reliance Industries’ streaming platform, JioHotstar, officially announced a strategic expansion of its partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery on Wednesday. This deal brings the premium HBO Max library to the Indian market, significantly broadening the platform’s content catalog for its massive subscriber base.

Aggressive Pricing Strategy for Indian Market

Starting immediately, HBO Max content will be accessible to JioHotstar subscribers as an add-on service. The entry price is set at just ₹49 (approximately $0.50) per month. This cost is a fraction of the $10.99 monthly fee required for a standard Basic tier subscription in the United States.

The integrated library includes high-profile content from HBO, Max Originals, Warner Bros. Pictures, Warner Bros. Television, and the DC Studios universe. JioHotstar confirmed that the user experience—including potential ad exposure—will be tied to the subscriber’s existing base plan. Currently, JioHotstar’s own tiered pricing ranges from ₹79 ($0.85) for mobile-only ad-supported plans to ₹299 ($3.20) for ad-free premium access.

Streaming Growth in India

The move comes as India’s streaming sector experiences explosive growth. A recent report by CLSA highlights that the nation’s streaming market has reached 1.45 billion monthly active users (MAUs), fueled by low-cost mobile data and high smartphone penetration. YouTube currently leads the market with 772 million MAUs, while JioHotstar maintains a strong second position with 390 million MAUs.

Despite these figures, market analysts from Third Bridge note that streaming penetration remains uneven. Usage rates hover between 23% and 27% in Tier 2 cities, dropping to 7%–8% in Tier 3 towns. Industry insights suggest that growth in these regions is largely driven by bundled service offerings rather than direct, standalone subscriptions.

Premium Content Slate

The new HBO Max hub on JioHotstar will serve as the exclusive home for a slate of highly anticipated global titles. Indian audiences will gain access to:

  • The third season of Euphoria
  • New episodes of House of the Dragon
  • DC Studios’ Lanterns
  • The upcoming Harry Potter television series
