Instagram officially launched a new “Watch History” feature this Friday, enabling users to easily track and recover previously viewed Reels. The update addresses a long-standing pain point for the platform, finally bringing its short-form video experience in line with competitor TikTok, which has offered similar functionality for years.
Never Lose a Reel Again
The new tool is designed for moments when a video is lost due to an accidental app closure, a sudden distraction, or an incoming phone call. Users no longer need to rely on cumbersome workarounds—such as downloading personal data files—to find content they previously enjoyed but forgot to save.
According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the feature is accessible via the app’s settings. “If you go to your Profile, select Settings, and navigate to Your Activity, you will find the new Watch History section. It logs every Reel you have viewed,” Mosseri explained in his announcement.
Advanced Sorting and Management
Instagram’s implementation offers significant flexibility, surpassing standard viewing logs. Users can manage their history with several refined options:
- Custom Sorting: Organize videos chronologically, in reverse chronological order, or filter by specific authors.
- Time-Based Filters: Narrow down results by the past week, the past month, or a precise date range.
- Manual Cleanup: Users retain full control and can delete specific entries from their watch history as needed.
Closing the Gap with TikTok
This update is a direct response to high user demand and marks another step in Meta’s strategy to refine the Reels ecosystem. By mirroring features already established on TikTok, Instagram continues to standardize the short-form video experience.
Recent updates, including the ability to link Reels in a series and the introduction of Picture-in-Picture viewing, demonstrate Meta’s commitment to feature parity. With the addition of Watch History, the platform eliminates the need for manual data sifting, streamlining the user journey and increasing content discoverability.
