Meta is rolling out aggressive new safeguards for Instagram accounts that primarily feature children, a move designed to curb the exploitation and harassment of minors on the platform. Announced this Wednesday, the update automatically restricts message settings and enables automated comment filtering for accounts managed by adults that showcase children or represent “kidfluencers.”
Stricter Controls for Child-Centric Profiles
The updated safety protocols target accounts run by parents, talent managers, and family vloggers. These profiles will now be moved to the platform’s most restrictive messaging tier to block unwanted contact. Additionally, the “Hidden Words” feature will be enabled by default to automatically filter offensive or sexualized comments, which have become a persistent issue for accounts featuring minors.
In a blog post, Meta acknowledged that while most of these accounts operate within guidelines, they are frequent targets for individuals seeking to violate safety rules by soliciting sexual images or leaving inappropriate remarks. To combat this, Meta is also limiting the visibility of these accounts to “suspicious” users—specifically those who have previously been blocked by teens—by removing them from search results and recommendation algorithms.
Addressing Long-Standing Criticism
This initiative follows intense scrutiny regarding the risks associated with “kidfluencers.” Investigative reports, including a notable study from the New York Times, have previously highlighted how parent-run accounts can inadvertently facilitate exploitation. Meta reported it has already removed nearly 135,000 accounts for sexualizing minors, alongside 500,000 associated profiles.
These policy shifts occur as Meta faces mounting pressure from the U.S. Surgeon General and various state regulators, some of whom have pushed for stricter legislative oversight and mandatory parental consent for social media access.
New Security Layers for Teen Accounts
Beyond child-focused profiles, Meta is enhancing protections for its dedicated “Teen Accounts.” New features include:
- Contextual Alerts: Users can now view the account creation date at the top of new chats to help identify potential scammers.
- Integrated Reporting: A unified tool now allows users to block and report accounts simultaneously.
- Safety Tips: Teens will receive prompts to review profiles and exercise caution regarding shared content.
According to Meta, these interventions are yielding results; in June alone, teens blocked and reported accounts over 2 million times after interacting with safety notices. Furthermore, the company’s nudity protection filter remains highly effective, with 99% of users opting to keep it active and nearly 40% of blurred images in DMs remaining unopened, proving the efficacy of these friction-based safety measures.
