Instagram officially announced a new awards program on Monday, designed to honor 25 creators who have significantly influenced culture and broken creative barriers. The initiative, which will see its inaugural winners revealed on October 16, focuses on symbolic recognition rather than financial compensation.

The Prize: Symbolic Prestige Over Cash
Recipients of the award will receive a custom, physical gold ring crafted by English fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner. Beyond the physical trophy, winners will gain digital status on the platform, featuring a golden ring around their profile picture and the ability to design a custom “Like” button for their feed posts. Notably, the program offers no monetary prize, positioning itself as a prestige-driven accolade for the creator community.
The selection process is overseen by a high-profile panel of judges, including Instagram head Adam Mosseri, filmmaker Spike Lee, designer Marc Jacobs, tech creator Marques Brownlee, actress Yara Shahidi, and makeup artist Pat McGrath.
Shifting Strategy in the Creator Economy
The launch of the “Ring” awards arrives as Meta continues to scale back its direct financial support for influencers. In recent years, the company has systematically dismantled several payout initiatives, including:
- The shutdown of ad-revenue sharing programs for creator profiles.
- The elimination of Reels bonuses on both Instagram and Facebook.
- The cancellation of affiliate marketing incentive bonuses.
This pivot toward non-monetary recognition occurs against a backdrop of tightening market conditions. According to a report by Kajabi, creators faced a 52% decline in brand deals throughout 2024. Furthermore, data from Bank of America highlights a growing concentration of paid partnerships among top-tier creators, making the broader landscape increasingly competitive.
An “Oscars” for Content Creators
Despite the lack of a cash prize or a traditional gala, Instagram is positioning these awards as a premier honor within the industry. The company described the initiative as an effort to celebrate those who “bring people together over their creativity” and remain unafraid to take creative risks.
By focusing on cultural impact rather than direct payouts, Instagram aims to solidify its role as a curator of prestige, attempting to elevate the status of its most influential users while navigating a cooling environment for sponsored content and influencer marketing.
