Ditching a bulky television for a compact home theater setup is now a reality. Startup Lumi Labs recently launched the Lumi Max, a portable projector priced at $400 that aims to disrupt the traditional living room aesthetic by combining 1080p Full HD resolution with the seamless integration of Google TV.
Design and Portability for Modern Living
Designed with small-apartment dwellers and outdoor enthusiasts in mind, the Lumi Max features a vertical, space-saving chassis. Weighing just over four pounds, the device is built for mobility, fitting easily into backpacks for camping trips or quick relocation between rooms. A dedicated carrying case is included, reinforcing its status as a versatile alternative to stationary displays.
Smart Integration via Google TV
The device distinguishes itself through a strategic partnership with Google. Out of the box, the Lumi Max runs on Google TV, providing immediate access to over 10,000 apps, 700,000 movies and TV shows, and 800+ free live TV channels. The setup process is streamlined for existing Google account holders and includes a dedicated remote for intuitive navigation.
Advanced Optics and Obstacle Avoidance
One of the most practical features is the projector’s intelligent auto-adjustment software. The system utilizes autofocus and obstacle avoidance to detect items like plants, shelves, or furniture on the projection surface. It automatically shifts the image to provide an optimal viewing experience, supporting display sizes ranging from 40 to 120 inches with 4K UHD compatibility.
Audio Performance and Ecosystem
The internal hardware includes two 5W speakers, totaling 10W of audio output with integrated Dolby Audio support. For users seeking a more immersive soundstage, the device allows for external audio system connectivity.
Price and Future Expansion
At a $400 price point, the Lumi Max offers a competitive feature-to-cost ratio compared to mid-range televisions. To complement the hardware, Lumi Labs offers additional accessories, including adjustable stands for $30 and 100-inch projector screens for $20. Looking ahead, the company plans to release the “Lumi IQ” mobile app, which will introduce AI-powered voice control to the projector’s interface.
