Meta Revamps Facebook: Marketplace and Friends Take Center – Ankor Tech

Meta is pivoting its flagship application away from the metaverse, launching a major redesign focused on core social connections and the high-performing Facebook Marketplace. Announced this Tuesday, the update aims to revitalize the platform’s utility by prioritizing the features that currently drive engagement, directly challenging the notion that the company’s virtual reality ambitions remain its primary focus.

The strategic shift follows reports of significant budget contractions within Meta’s metaverse division. While Facebook maintains a massive global user base, growth in key markets like the U.S. has plateaued, prompting a renewed effort to capture the attention of younger demographics, specifically Gen Z.

Marketplace Moves to the Main Stage

Data indicates that Facebook Marketplace is the primary hook for younger users. A 2025 eMarketer report confirms that over half of U.S. Gen Z users utilize the platform to buy and sell goods. To capitalize on this, Meta is moving Marketplace from the obscure “More” menu directly into the app’s primary bottom navigation bar, placing it alongside Reels and Friends.

Visual Overhaul and Feed Enhancements

The redesign borrows successful UI elements from Instagram to modernize the Facebook experience. Key updates include:

  • Double-Tap to Like: A familiar gesture now coming to the Facebook Feed.
  • Standardized Grids: Photos will be displayed in a consistent layout, with full-screen viewing capabilities.
  • Immersive Search: An updated search interface featuring a grid layout for seamless content discovery.

Streamlined Content Creation

Meta is simplifying the posting process by decluttering the composer tool. Users will find it easier to add music, tag friends, and manage audience settings. By reducing distractions, the company aims to encourage more organic sharing.

Conversational Depth and User Feedback

Interaction is receiving a substantial upgrade. Comment sections will feature streamlined replies, more visible badges, and new pinning tools for creators and group admins. Furthermore, users will gain the ability to anonymously flag irrelevant content and provide direct feedback on why they dislike specific posts, allowing for more granular personalization of their Feeds.

Reclaiming the “Social” in Social Network

In an effort to return to its roots, Facebook is launching updated profiles that allow users to showcase personal interests, such as travel, music, and hobbies. To prevent the “embarrassment” of forced updates, the app will now allow users to choose whether profile changes—like new cover photos—are automatically broadcast to their friends’ Feeds.

These features are scheduled to roll out globally over the coming weeks, with the most significant changes, including the navigation bar and composer redesign, launching specifically for mobile users.
