Microsoft Copilot Drops WhatsApp Support: What You Must Know – Ankor Tech

Microsoft has officially confirmed that its AI chatbot, Copilot, will cease operations on WhatsApp starting January 15. Following this deadline, users will no longer be able to interact with the AI through the messaging platform, forcing a migration to the dedicated Copilot web interface or the company’s standalone mobile applications.

Why Is Microsoft Removing Copilot from WhatsApp?

The decision stems from a strategic shift in WhatsApp’s platform policies announced late last year. Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has restricted the use of its Business API for general-purpose AI chatbots. The platform now aims to prioritize resources for specific business-to-customer communications rather than hosting third-party AI assistants.

As Microsoft explained, this policy adjustment effectively terminates WhatsApp as a viable distribution channel for AI services. This regulatory pivot has triggered a wider industry retreat, impacting major players including OpenAI and Perplexity, both of which are winding down their respective WhatsApp integrations throughout January, as OpenAI previously confirmed.

Data Migration and History Loss

A critical challenge for users is the loss of chat history. Because the Copilot integration on WhatsApp functioned as an unauthenticated service, there is no mechanism to sync previous conversations to a Microsoft account.

Microsoft is urging users who wish to keep their data to take action immediately. You must utilize WhatsApp’s native export tools to save your chat logs before the January 15 cutoff. Once the service is disabled, any unexported history will be permanently inaccessible.
