Director Morgan Neville has officially pivoted away from generative AI in his filmmaking, following the intense public backlash surrounding his 2021 documentary, Roadrunner. The controversy stemmed from Neville’s decision to use synthetic voice technology to replicate the late Anthony Bourdain’s narration.

The Ethics of Synthetic Voices

In Roadrunner, Neville utilized AI to generate a voice-over of Bourdain reading words the chef had written in emails but never recorded aloud. While the director initially viewed the technique as a creative way to honor Bourdain’s presence, the result sparked widespread ethical concerns regarding the authenticity of documentary storytelling.

Speaking with Wired, Neville acknowledged that audiences were deeply unsettled by the deception. Many viewers incorrectly assumed the AI had been used to fabricate quotes rather than simply reciting existing text. The reaction was so significant that it forced other documentary filmmakers to either abandon similar projects or add prominent disclaimers to their work.

A New Standard in Filmmaking

Since the incident, Neville has made a conscious effort to avoid AI in his creative process. His commitment to this new standard is evident in his latest project, Piece by Piece, a unique documentary that tells the life story of Pharrell Williams through Lego animation.

Even when faced with the challenge of including the late Carl Sagan in the film, Neville refused to rely on synthetic generation. Instead, his team opted for a painstaking manual process to maintain integrity:

“Carl Sagan in Piece by Piece says, ‘Pharrell,’ and I was very clear to everybody that we were, with permission of his widow, going to make him say ‘Pharrell’ without using AI. We actually experimented to construct the word from syllables [he actually said],” Neville explained.

This approach highlights a shift in the industry, where directors are increasingly prioritizing transparent production methods over the convenience of generative tools. You can watch the trailer for the Lego-animated documentary here.
