MoviePass, the subscription service that revolutionized cinema-going, is pivoting into the gaming sector. On Thursday, the company announced the beta launch of Mogul, a daily fantasy platform tailored exclusively for the film industry.

How Mogul Gamifies the Hollywood Experience
Drawing inspiration from the mechanics of daily fantasy sports, Mogul allows users to step into the role of a studio head. Instead of drafting athletes, players manage a roster of actors using “studio credits,” an in-game currency. Participants can update their lineups daily and compete in week-long tournaments, one-on-one matches, and solo challenges.
Success in Mogul is tied to real-world industry performance. Players make strategic predictions on box office revenue, audience turnout, critical reception, and major award wins. As users climb the leaderboard, they unlock digital collectibles, including memorabilia and signed posters, rewarding their expertise in cinema trends.

Market Potential and User Interest
CEO Stacy Spikes believes the platform taps into an underserved market of film enthusiasts. “People can name more actors than they can probably name sports athletes,” Spikes noted. While initial skepticism surrounded the viability of a movie-based fantasy platform, the demand appears significant: MoviePass reports that over 400,000 users have already joined the early-access waitlist.
Blockchain Infrastructure and Regulatory Navigation
Mogul is built on Sui, a layer 1 blockchain and smart contract platform supported by Mysten Labs. Beta testers are provided with a digital wallet to securely manage their rewards, virtual currency, and digital collectibles. This integration aligns with MoviePass’s broader Web3 strategy, which includes backing from blockchain-focused venture capital firm Animoca Brands.
Currently, the platform operates strictly with virtual currency. This distinction is strategic, as it allows MoviePass to navigate the complex regulatory environment surrounding prediction markets. Unlike platforms that deal in real-money gambling—which often face state-by-state legal challenges—Mogul’s current model avoids the “legal gray area” that has hampered competitors like Kalshi.
“It’s murky what needs to be approved. It literally is like a Chinese puzzle with stuff all over the place,” Spikes said regarding the fragmented US regulatory landscape. By focusing on a fantasy-style gaming experience rather than direct betting, MoviePass aims to build a sustainable ecosystem for film fans while potentially incorporating on-chain rewards for cinema attendance in the future.
This launch marks a significant milestone in the company’s evolution, following their previous partnership with Sui to facilitate payments using USD coin.
