MPA Slaps Meta with Cease-and-Desist Over PG-13 Label – Ankor Tech

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has officially challenged Meta, issuing a cease-and-desist letter demanding the tech giant stop using the trademarked “PG-13” label to describe content restrictions on Instagram, as first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The Conflict Over Content Classification

The dispute stems from a policy update announced by Meta last month, which mandated that teen accounts on Instagram be defaulted to content settings aligned with PG-13 movie ratings. Following this rollout, the MPA intervened, labeling Meta’s marketing of the feature as “literally false and highly misleading.”

The MPA argues that its established rating system is incompatible with the automated, AI-driven content filtering mechanisms employed by Meta. According to the trade group, equating the two systems misleads parents and users regarding the nature of the protections in place.

Protecting the MPA Brand Integrity

The core of the MPA’s grievance lies in the potential erosion of its long-standing reputation. The cease-and-desist letter emphasizes that the organization has spent decades building public trust in its rating standards. The MPA contends that if users become dissatisfied with Meta’s AI-based content moderation, the association will suffer collateral damage as the public begins to question the integrity of the official film rating system.

Meta’s Defense: Fair Use and Clarification

Meta has pushed back against the legal threat, clarifying that its internal systems are not officially certified by the MPA. The company maintains that its content restrictions are merely “guided” by the principles of the PG-13 rating, rather than being a direct extension of the MPA’s classification process.

Furthermore, Meta has signaled that its use of the term constitutes fair use, rejecting the assertion that it is infringing upon the MPA’s trademark or deceiving its user base.
