Netflix has officially integrated generative AI into its production pipeline, marking a pivotal shift in how the streaming giant crafts its original content. During a recent post-results conference call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed that the platform has successfully utilized AI to generate final footage for a high-profile production.

AI-Generated Visuals in ‘El Eternauta’

The first instance of GenAI-produced imagery appearing on screen occurred in the Argentine series “El Eternauta” (“The Eternaut”). Netflix’s internal production team collaborated with show producers to render a complex scene depicting a collapsing building. According to Sarandos, the implementation of AI tools allowed the team to finalize the sequence 10 times faster than traditional visual effects (VFX) methods, while simultaneously reducing production costs.

Beyond Cost-Cutting: Empowering Creators

Sarandos emphasized that the strategic adoption of AI is not merely a cost-saving measure but a way to provide creators with superior tools. “We remain convinced that AI represents an incredible opportunity to help creators make films and series better,” he stated. The executive highlighted that these technologies are already enhancing pre-visualization, shot-planning, and advanced VFX, such as de-aging, which were previously reserved for only the largest-budget projects.

Expanding AI Across the Netflix Ecosystem

The integration of artificial intelligence extends well beyond the editing room. Co-CEO Greg Peters noted that Netflix is aggressively deploying generative AI across several core business sectors, including:

  • Search and Discovery: Enhancing the user experience through AI-powered search functionality introduced earlier this year.
  • Personalization: Refining recommendation algorithms to keep viewers engaged.
  • Advertising: Developing interactive ad formats, slated for rollout in the second half of this year.

Financial Performance and Global Growth

The announcement of these technological advancements coincides with a period of robust financial growth for the company. Netflix reported second-quarter revenue of $11.08 billion—a 16% increase year-over-year—with profits reaching $3.13 billion. Audience data underscores the global nature of the platform, with users consuming over 95 billion hours of content in the first half of 2025. Notably, non-English language titles now account for one-third of all views on the service.
