Olyn: The ‘Shopify for Filmmakers’ Disrupting Streaming – Ankor Tech

The recent biopic Midas Man, centered on The Beatles’ legendary manager Brian Epstein, bypassed traditional giants like Netflix and Amazon to debut on Olyn. This California-based startup is positioning itself as the “Shopify for filmmakers,” introducing a decentralized distribution model that challenges the status quo of the entertainment industry.

A New Paradigm for Film Distribution

Olyn allows independent creators to retain up to 90% of their revenue by bypassing traditional streaming middlemen. Instead of selling licensing rights for a flat fee, filmmakers use the platform to host their content directly, leveraging social referrals, influencers, and critics to drive traffic. By embedding purchase links across blogs and social channels, creators turn movie distribution into an e-commerce-style engagement.

Empowering Creators with Data and Control

CEO and co-founder Ana Maria Jipa explains that Olyn provides a full-stack streaming architecture, including 4K delivery, DRM, geo-targeting, and granular audience analytics. Unlike major platforms that keep viewership data behind a curtain, Olyn grants filmmakers direct access to their audience metrics.

“Filmmakers can spend years making a film but never own their audience,” Jipa notes. “This is a powerful tool to directly address fans for future projects.” Perry Trevers, producer at Studio POW, emphasizes that this approach allows creators to mirror the direct-to-consumer success seen in e-commerce, regaining control over how their work reaches viewers.

Combating Piracy and Market Fragmentation

A core mission for Olyn is tackling global piracy. By providing an accessible, instant payment-to-watch experience, the platform aims to reach markets where movies are often unavailable. Co-founder Malcolm Wood highlights that while many films on traditional services struggle to gain traction, Olyn’s model allows for hybrid strategies—selling rights in one region while going direct-to-consumer in others to maximize profitability.

Future Scalability and Challenges

Founded by Jipa, Wood, Jeremías Buireo, and Kiran Thomas, the platform evolved from an initial concept of cataloging physical assets, partially inspired by filmmaker Craig Leeson. To date, the company has secured $2.8 million in funding, led by the U.S. VC firm Hard Yaka.

While the platform faces the challenge of shifting the marketing burden entirely onto production teams, its long-term vision is to evolve into a pure SaaS model. Jipa envisions a future where Olyn removes itself as a gatekeeper entirely, allowing filmmakers to determine their own content standards and distribution strategies without platform intervention.
