Former Twitter engineers have launched Particle, a new AI-powered news aggregator designed to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence and the struggling media industry. Unlike many AI models that scrape data without providing value to creators, Particle focuses on driving traffic back to news publishers and fostering sustainable partnerships.

Founded by former Twitter product leader Sara Beykpour and ex-Tesla/Twitter engineer Marcel Molina, the startup has secured $15.3 million in funding, including a $10.9 million Series A round led by Lightspeed.

Prioritizing Publisher Traffic and Revenue

The core philosophy of Particle is to avoid the “data-sucking” trap of traditional AI search bots. Instead, the app prominently features links to original sources directly beneath its AI-generated summaries. By partnering with outlets like Reuters, AFP, and Fortune, Particle provides these publishers with enhanced visibility, including gold-highlighted links that direct users straight to the source material.

The team is actively exploring models to provide users with access to paywalled content, ensuring that publishers can monetize their work while the AI helps readers navigate complex stories.

AI Features for Smarter News Consumption

Particle goes beyond simple bullet points. The app offers a customizable reading experience designed to help users digest information in ways that suit their needs:

  • Explain Like I’m 5: Simplifies complex narratives for better accessibility.
  • Just the Facts: Extracts the 5W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why).
  • Multi-Language & Audio: Provides summaries in various languages and offers audio playback for on-the-go consumption.

Breaking the Filter Bubble

One of the app’s most distinct features is “Opposite Sides,” which combats ideological echo chambers. By utilizing a “story spectrum,” the app maps how news is being reported across the political divide, showing users both left- and right-leaning coverage. The AI summarizes the positions from both sides, allowing readers to form their own, more informed opinions.

Fact-Checking and Technical Precision

Particle integrates an AI chatbot that allows users to ask specific questions about a story. The system uses a combination of LLMs—including OpenAI’s GPT-4o, Anthropic, and Cohere—alongside proprietary pre- and post-processing algorithms.

According to the company, this pipeline significantly reduces AI hallucination rates, claiming to drop errors from one in 100 to one in 10,000. The app further verifies answers by cross-referencing them with the original source material. As the platform scales, Particle plans to incorporate human editors to curate the homepage and manage the quality of the AI-generated content.

Particle is currently available as a free download on iOS for iPhone and iPad users.
