Pinwheel, a company specialized in child-safe technology, has officially released the Pinwheel Watch, a new wearable designed for children aged 7 to 14. Launched last week on Pinwheel.com, the device offers a connected experience without the risks associated with traditional smartphones, such as unfiltered internet access or social media exposure.

A New Era of AI for Children

The standout feature of the $160 smartwatch is “PinwheelGPT,” an integrated AI chatbot. While AI assistants often raise concerns regarding misinformation or potential social dependency, Pinwheel emphasizes that the tool is built with strict guardrails. The system is trained to recognize sensitive or inappropriate topics, actively refusing to engage in such conversations and instead encouraging children to consult a trusted adult.

Parents retain full oversight, with the ability to review all past and present chat interactions. Founder Dane Witbeck, a father of four, confirmed that Pinwheel does not utilize user data—from minors or adults—to train its AI models. Furthermore, parents can disable the AI feature entirely through the management app if they prefer.

Parental Control and Safety Features

Beyond the AI assistant, the watch functions as a robust communication tool. It supports voice-to-text messaging, video calls via a built-in camera, and standard voice calling. The “Caregiver” app serves as the central hub for parental management, offering several critical safety layers:

  • Safelist Management: Parents define exactly who can contact their child, rejecting unknown or unauthorized numbers.
  • Scheduled Restrictions: The “Schedule” tab allows parents to toggle device modes, ensuring the watch is restricted during school hours or camp, then shifting to full access later.
  • Message Monitoring: Parents can opt to monitor text threads, supplemented by an AI-powered summary feature that provides quick insights into conversations.

Market Positioning and Availability

Pinwheel is entering a competitive $100 billion wearable market, positioning its product as a more focused alternative to devices like the Fitbit Ace LTE. While competitors often prioritize fitness and health metrics, the Pinwheel Watch emphasizes communication safety and controlled interaction.

The device is currently available in the United States for $160, plus a $15 monthly subscription fee. Following its U.S. debut, the company plans to expand into the U.K. market this autumn. A broader release via Amazon is also scheduled for later this summer.
