Google officially announced on Wednesday that its “Loss of Pulse Detection” feature for the Pixel Watch 3 has secured FDA clearance. This critical health-monitoring capability is scheduled to roll out to users in the United States by the end of March.
How Loss of Pulse Detection Works
The feature is designed to identify instances where a user’s heart stops beating, potentially caused by primary cardiac arrest, respiratory or circulatory failure, poisoning, or drug overdose. Upon detecting a loss of pulse, the wearable prompts the user to confirm their status. If the device receives no response, it automatically initiates an emergency call to summon professional medical assistance.
Advanced AI-Driven Monitoring
Unveiled during last year’s Made by Google event, the technology relies on a sophisticated AI-driven algorithm. Rather than relying solely on pulse data, the Pixel Watch 3 cross-references heart rate information with motion and other physiological metrics to determine if a life-threatening event is occurring.
Global Expansion and Availability
The United States launch marks a significant expansion for the feature, which initially debuted in the EU in September 2024. It is currently available across 14 different countries, solidifying Google’s commitment to integrating advanced health safety tools into its wearable ecosystem.
Important Safety Limitations
Google emphasizes that this feature is not a substitute for professional medical intervention. The company explicitly states that “Loss of Pulse Detection may not detect every instance of a loss of pulse and is not intended for users with preexisting heart conditions or those who require cardiac monitoring.” Furthermore, the emergency calling function is strictly contingent upon the device having adequate battery life and stable cellular connectivity.
Building a Safety Ecosystem
This update complements the existing suite of safety and health features already integrated into the Pixel Watch series, including:
- Fall Detection
- Car Crash Detection
- Irregular Heart Rhythm Notifications
- ECG application
