Spotify Launches AI Playlists: Create Music With Prompts – Ankor Tech

Spotify is officially stepping into the future of music curation with the launch of its new “AI Playlists” feature. Currently in beta, the tool allows users to generate custom music collections simply by typing written prompts into the app. The feature is rolling out for Android and iOS users in the U.K. and Australia, with plans for further evolution and expansion.

How AI Playlists Work

Unlike traditional search filters, this new feature leverages large language models (LLMs) to interpret complex user intent. Listeners can request highly specific vibes, such as “songs to serenade my cat” or “beats to battle a zombie apocalypse.” The AI functions best when users combine genres, moods, artists, and decades into their prompts.

Once the initial playlist is generated, users retain full control. You can refine the results with follow-up commands like “less upbeat” or “more pop.” Additionally, individual tracks can be removed by swiping left, and the final result can be saved directly to your library.

Integration and Personalization

Spotify integrates this tool into its existing ecosystem by tapping into the “Your Library” tab. By tapping the plus (+) icon, users will see the “AI Playlist” option alongside standard playlist and “Blend” features. For those unsure where to start, the app provides suggested prompts, such as “get focused at work with instrumental electronica” or “explore a niche genre like Witch House.”

The system is built on a combination of LLMs to understand intent and Spotify’s proprietary personalization technology, which analyzes a user’s unique listening history and preferences to ensure the output aligns with their taste.

Safety and Development

To ensure a positive experience, Spotify has implemented guardrails to block offensive prompts or requests related to current events and specific brands. This release follows a period of rapid AI development at the company, including the successful global rollout of its AI DJ feature, which uses voice synthesis technology developed with Sonantic and OpenAI.

The concept of prompt-based playlists has been in the works for some time. Tech observers first spotted code references to the feature in late 2023, followed by leaked footage on social media. This new tool replaces the older, more limited “Niche Mixes” feature, marking a significant leap forward in how Spotify utilizes machine learning to enhance the user experience.

Looking ahead, CEO Daniel Ek has signaled that this is just the beginning of Spotify’s AI ambitions. The company is actively exploring further applications, including AI-generated podcast summaries, automated audio ad creation, and voice-cloning technology for host-read advertisements.
