Spotify Launches AI-Powered Prompted Playlists in US & Canada – Ankor Tech

Spotify is officially rolling out its advanced “Prompted Playlists” feature to Premium subscribers across the United States and Canada. This AI-driven tool allows users to generate custom music collections by simply typing descriptive, conversational prompts, marking a significant shift in how listeners interact with their libraries.

Beyond Basic Commands: A Conversational Experience

While Spotify introduced a rudimentary AI playlist tool in 2024—focused on specific, short commands like “get focused at work”—this new iteration represents a major leap forward. The system is designed to process complex, detailed instructions rather than just genre or mood keywords.

During a recent demonstration, the tool successfully executed intricate requests, such as: “Find me an artist I haven’t listened to yet, but would likely enjoy, or someone I’ve only heard once, and introduce me to them. Build a playlist of songs that provide a catalog overview, placing the tracks you think I’ll enjoy most in the top five spots.”

Democratizing Music Curation

According to J.J. Italiano, head of Global Music Curation and Discovery at Spotify, the goal is to remove the barriers of technical music knowledge. Listeners no longer need to understand specific industry terminology or genre classifications to build the perfect vibe.

“If you can describe a feeling, you can make a playlist,” Italiano stated. The feature acts as a bridge, giving users access to the same creative curation processes used by the team behind major playlists like Today’s Top Hits and Rap Caviar.

How the AI Engine Operates

The underlying AI analyzes music in real-time, factoring in global trends, cultural history, and charts. Crucially, it balances this data with the user’s entire listening history. Users retain full control, however; they can explicitly command the AI to ignore their history to discover entirely new sounds or base the output on specific inspirations like weather or TV shows.

Because prompts are shareable, Spotify anticipates a new ecosystem where users exchange unique prompts, even though each resulting playlist remains personalized to the individual’s specific tastes.

Beta Limitations and Future Rollout

As the feature remains in beta, it is currently limited to English-language prompts and includes usage caps. Spotify has confirmed that the new tool will operate alongside the existing, simpler AI playlist feature, though they have not yet disclosed a timeline for a global release, citing a need to gather data from the North American market first.
