Spotify officially launched a series of interface updates this Wednesday, aimed at elevating podcast visibility within its application. By integrating new recommendation engines and a dedicated “Following” feed, the streaming giant seeks to fortify its position against aggressive competition from Apple Podcasts and YouTube.

Enhanced Discovery and User Experience

The core of the update focuses on the Home page, where Spotify has begun rolling out personalized podcast recommendations to global users. Early internal metrics suggest this shift is already driving higher engagement, with users showing an increased tendency to “like” and save shows they discover through the new algorithm.

Furthermore, the introduction of a “Following” feed addresses long-standing user friction regarding content tracking. Located under the Podcasts tab, this dedicated space aggregates the latest episodes from followed shows, eliminating the need for manual searches. To access this, users simply tap the Podcasts button at the top of the app and select the “Following” option.

The Battle for Podcast Supremacy

These adjustments arrive as the landscape for audio consumption becomes increasingly crowded. YouTube, in particular, has ramped up its efforts, recently launching its own weekly top podcast list. Data highlights significant differences in consumption habits between the platforms, yet YouTube remains the dominant player in the U.S., capturing one-third of weekly podcast listeners.

Spotify continues to differentiate itself by aggressively investing in video podcasts. All creators now have the ability to upload video content, supported by monetization incentives through the Spotify Partner Program.

New Tools for Content Creators

Beyond the listener experience, Spotify is rolling out features to deepen creator-fan interactions:

  • Cross-Content Linking: Over the coming weeks, creators will be able to tag and link to other content mentioned in their episodes—including songs, playlists, audiobooks, and other podcasts—directly on the episode page.
  • Enhanced Commenting: Creators can now utilize emoji reactions to engage with listener comments.

Spotify maintains that creators retain full control over their digital space, with the option to moderate or disable comments entirely via their Spotify for Creators account.
