Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg officially announced that Threads is beginning tests for a dedicated direct messaging (DM) inbox. This update marks a significant shift, allowing users to communicate directly within the Threads app rather than relying on Instagram’s messaging infrastructure.
Testing Phases and Current Limitations
The new feature is currently rolling out in a limited capacity across select regions, including Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina. For this initial testing phase, the functionality is strictly limited to one-on-one conversations. Group messaging support has not yet been implemented.
Evolving Beyond the Instagram Ecosystem
When Threads launched in July 2023, it relied heavily on Instagram’s network effects to jumpstart its user base. However, after 20 months of operation, Meta has recognized that Threads has cultivated a unique community distinct from Instagram. Many users maintain different follower bases on each platform, and a significant portion of the Threads audience is less active on Instagram.
Previously, Instagram head Adam Mosseri suggested that the company considered integrating Threads messages into the existing Instagram inbox. The company ultimately pivoted, acknowledging that users explicitly requested a standalone communication experience that avoids the friction of app-switching.
Competitive Pressure in the Social Space
The introduction of native DMs arrives as Meta faces stiff competition from decentralized and public-facing alternatives. The rollout appears to be a direct response to rival platforms that have already prioritized in-app communication:
- Bluesky: Introduced direct messaging capabilities in May 2024.
- X (formerly Twitter): Recently launched XChat, which includes advanced features such as group messaging, file sharing, and vanishing modes.
While the addition of a native inbox is a functional upgrade for the platform, Meta’s timeline places it behind key competitors in the race to provide a comprehensive social messaging experience.
