TikTok is officially rolling out in-app guided meditation exercises to help users improve sleep hygiene and break the cycle of late-night doomscrolling. Following a successful pilot program with select teen users earlier this year, the feature is now expanding to the global user base.

Targeting Teen Screen Time

The platform is prioritizing younger audiences by enabling the meditation feature by default for users under the age of 18. If a teen is active on the app past 10 p.m., the “For You” feed will be automatically interrupted by a guided meditation session. This experience utilizes calming visuals and soft audio cues, paired with breathing exercises designed to encourage a wind-down routine.

Should a user choose to bypass the initial prompt, TikTok will display a second full-screen notification nudging them to prioritize sleep over continued engagement.

Regulatory Pressure and Safety Initiatives

This update arrives as part of a broader, multi-year strategy by TikTok to address growing legislative and public concern regarding the app’s impact on adolescent mental health. By introducing these friction points, the company aims to demonstrate a proactive approach to digital well-being, effectively responding to demands from lawmakers for stricter safety controls.

How Adults Can Access Meditation Tools

While the feature is mandatory for minors, adult users can opt into the experience manually. To activate the tool:

  • Navigate to your Settings menu.
  • Select Screen Time.
  • Toggle on the “Sleep Hours” feature.
  • Customize the specific time you wish to be prompted with the meditation exercise each night.

Broader Mental Health Commitment

Beyond the new interface updates, TikTok has pledged $2.3 million in advertising credits to support 31 mental health organizations across 19 countries. This initiative is part of the company’s “Mental Health Education Fund,” aimed at increasing the visibility of professional resources within the app’s ecosystem.
