Tumblr TV Goes Mainstream: A New Rival for TikTok? – Ankor Tech

Nearly a decade after its initial debut as an experimental GIF discovery tool, Tumblr is officially graduating “Tumblr TV” to a core feature. The move comes as the blogging platform aggressively positions itself as a viable alternative for users navigating the uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future in the United States.

From Experimental Labs to Core Feature

Tumblr announced on Tuesday that the video-centric feature is exiting the Tumblr Labs phase. For new users, the tab will appear prominently in the third position within the app interface. Existing users can manually enable or disable the experience via their Dashboard Tabs settings.

The “TikTok Effect” and Platform Migration

The timing of this release is far from coincidental. Following the U.S. government’s legislative action against TikTok, Tumblr witnessed a significant influx of new users. On January 19—the date the TikTok ban was set to take effect—the platform recorded a 35% spike in iOS app installs and a 70% surge in new users joining specific interest-based “Communities.”

Migration trends are already visible on the platform, with users creating dedicated hubs such as the TikTok Repository and TikTok Refugees. These spaces serve as digital archives for creators looking to preserve and share content outside of the TikTok ecosystem.

Can Tumblr Truly Compete?

While Tumblr has refined the experience by adding lightbox support, improved scrubbing, and video hosting, the platform faces a steep uphill battle. Unlike TikTok, which is built entirely around original, vertical-first creator content, Tumblr’s feed remains a mix of legacy GIFs and repurposed video clips.

Although the mobile interface mimics TikTok’s vertical swipe-based navigation within channels like Art or Sports, the content quality remains inconsistent. Many videos are not optimized for vertical viewing, and the reliance on older, grainy GIF formats highlights the fundamental differences between the two platforms.

Despite these challenges, Tumblr aims to provide a “home base” for digital creators. However, with the TikTok ban currently on hold following intervention from the Trump administration and a 75-day extension granted for potential divestiture, the urgent demand for a permanent backup platform remains fluid.
