Jeff Lawson, the co-founder and former CEO of cloud communications giant Twilio, has officially acquired The Onion, the iconic satirical news outlet. The announcement, confirmed late Thursday via a LinkedIn post, follows initial reports from The New York Times. While specific financial terms remain undisclosed, the move marks a new chapter for the publication known as “America’s finest news source.”

A Legacy of Satire

Since its inception in 1988, The Onion has evolved from a weekly print newspaper into a digital media powerhouse. Renowned for its deadpan delivery of absurd news and its signature “Area Man” archetypes, the site has spent over three decades parodying the global news cycle. Despite its satirical nature, the outlet has frequently blurred the lines between fiction and reality, cementing its status as a staple of internet culture.

From Univision to Global Tetrahedron

The acquisition is the latest in a complex history of ownership. After being controlled by Univision in 2016, the brand was folded into G/O Media Inc. following a 2019 sale to private equity firm Great Hill Partners. Now, the publication moves to a new Chicago-based entity dubbed “Global Tetrahedron.”

The name is a nod to a fictional corporation featured in The Onion’s 1999 satirical book, “Our Dumb Century.” Lawson, who stepped down from his role at Twilio in January, is the driving force behind this new venture.

Fixing the Internet: Lawson’s Vision

Lawson’s motivation for the purchase stems from a desire to strip away the “byzantine” elements currently plaguing online media. He explicitly criticized the prevalence of intrusive cookie dialogs, paywalls, and low-quality clickbait that define the modern web.

“The Onion is an institution, a national treasure, and we need it,” Lawson stated. “The Internet sucks, and it’s time we made it better. It’s time to focus on customers—end users—again.”

A Call for a Single Dollar

As part of the ownership transition, The Onion has launched a campaign urging fans to donate exactly $1 to support the publication. Lawson maintains that while there will be new products and mediums introduced in the future, the current goal is to engage the community directly.

“If you care about The Onion, if The Onion ever made you laugh—give us a buck,” Lawson wrote. “For that dollar, you get … absolutely nothing. Just a smug sense that you’ve once again spent less on The Onion than it’s worth in your life.”
