Vurt, a mobile-first streaming platform, officially launched this Tuesday to bridge the gap between independent filmmakers and the booming vertical video market. By allowing creators to upload micro-series and full-length features directly, the platform aims to capitalize on the shift toward mobile-centric content consumption that has already disrupted traditional giants like Netflix and Disney+.

Capitalizing on the “Micro-Drama” Explosion
The rise of platforms like ReelShort and DramaBox has transformed “micro-drama” from a niche trend into a multibillion-dollar industry. Appfigures data indicates that ReelShort was projected to generate $1.2 billion in consumer spending during 2025, while DramaBox raked in $276 million. With TikTok also entering the fray, Vurt enters a competitive landscape that includes specialized players like Watch Club, which leverages SAG-AFTRA and WGA talent.
Vurt differentiates itself by bypassing the archaic distribution hurdles typically associated with major streaming services. Instead of relying on aggregators, creators can submit content directly. Once approved, projects are typically live on the platform within 48 to 72 hours.
Monetization and Creator-Friendly Terms
For independent filmmakers, Vurt offers a clear path to profitability through an AVOD (advertising-based video on demand) model. The platform utilizes a non-exclusive licensing agreement with a 50/50 revenue split, allowing creators to retain rights while earning from ad placements on their titles.

Industry Veterans Behind the Vision
The platform was founded by Ted Lucas, the mastermind behind Slip-N-Slide Records. Lucas developed the concept after facing distribution challenges while promoting his documentary, “Miami Kingpins.” His goal is to democratize access for creators lacking the resources to navigate traditional media gatekeepers.
The leadership team includes:
- Eric Tomosunas: Founder of Swirl Films.
- Mark A. Samuels: Director and producer.
- Hilmon Sorey: Angel investor.
- Tarik Brooks: Former executive at BET and REVOLT (Advisory role).
Currently, the library features over 100 episodes of original micro-series, full-length films, and TV shows, with new titles added weekly. The platform is now available for download via the Apple App Store, Google Play, and a dedicated web portal.
