Meta officially announced on Wednesday the integration of AI-powered message summaries into WhatsApp. This new, optional feature leverages Meta AI to automatically distill unread messages within a chat, allowing users to stay updated without manually scrolling through long conversation threads.
Privacy-First AI Implementation
A critical component of this rollout is the commitment to user privacy. Meta emphasizes that these summaries remain entirely private; they are visible exclusively to the user who triggers the function. Other participants in the chat will have no visibility into the fact that a summary was generated or what it contains.

This functionality is built upon Private Processing technology launched in April. According to an official WhatsApp blog post, this architecture enables Meta AI to process requests without Meta or WhatsApp ever accessing the underlying message content or the resulting summaries, preserving end-to-end encryption standards.
How to Access and Manage AI Features
While the feature is disabled by default, WhatsApp users will see a subtle icon indicating its availability when applicable. Meta is currently deploying the tool in the U.S. with exclusive support for the English language, with plans to expand to additional regions and languages later this year.
Previously, Meta AI’s capabilities were limited to general queries or responding to specific tagged messages. The new technical stack now allows the AI to securely access chat context to perform tasks like summarizing conversations or offering writing suggestions.
Users maintain full control over these tools. The feature can be toggled on or off by navigating to Settings > Chats > Private Processing, where individual AI functions can be managed according to user preference.
