YouTube is officially rolling out a new feature allowing users to hide end-screen recommendation pop-ups that frequently obstruct video content. Announced this Wednesday, the update provides a cleaner viewing experience by giving viewers direct control over the interface.

How to Clear Your YouTube Video Player

When an end screen appears on a video, users can now select a new “Hide” button located in the top-right corner of the player. This action instantly clears the recommendations, allowing viewers to see the final seconds of the footage without visual clutter. If a user wishes to restore these suggestions, they can simply tap the “Show” button.

It is important to note that this setting is not a global preference. Selecting “Hide” only affects the specific video currently being watched. YouTube implemented this as a granular control mechanism rather than a platform-wide permanent toggle, responding to widespread feedback from users who found end screens intrusive and distracting.

Streamlining the Subscription Process

Beyond the end-screen changes, YouTube is also removing the “Subscribe” button that previously appeared when hovering over a video’s branded watermark. The platform stated this feature is redundant, as a permanent, high-visibility Subscribe button is already located directly below every video player.

Impact on Content Creators

While users gain more control, creators retain the ability to add end screens to their content. YouTube’s internal testing suggests these changes will have a negligible effect on channel performance:

  • End-screen engagement: Providing the “Hide” option resulted in a view decrease of less than 1.5%.
  • Watermark subscriptions: Less than 0.05% of total channel subscriptions originated from the hover-to-subscribe watermark feature.

By removing underutilized UI elements and offering better control over overlays, YouTube aims to prioritize content focus over aggressive promotion.
