YouTube has launched a new experimental AI-powered search feature designed to provide users with guided, step-by-step answers for complex queries. Currently available to select users, the tool synthesizes text, short-form clips, and long-form videos to deliver comprehensive responses directly within the search interface.
How the “Ask YouTube” Feature Works
The “Ask YouTube” tool moves beyond traditional video lists by offering interactive, conversational results. Instead of simply surfacing a library of videos, the AI generates structured responses to specific prompts, such as “plan a 3-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara.”

The results include a blend of text summaries and relevant video segments. Each segment features channel details and specific titles, ensuring that users can easily discover new creators while getting the information they need. The feature also supports follow-up questions, allowing users to refine their search—for example, by asking for coffee shop recommendations along a planned route—without restarting the query.
Availability and Expansion Plans
This experimental feature is currently restricted to YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States who are 18 years of age or older. Interested users can opt into the trial via the official YouTube testing page. Google has confirmed that it intends to expand access to non-Premium users in the future.
Google’s Broader AI Search Strategy
This rollout is part of Google’s aggressive push to integrate AI-driven, multi-part query capabilities across its ecosystem. This initiative follows the introduction of “AI mode” last year, which allows for conversational search, as well as recent updates like side-by-side web browsing and the Gemini Canvas project tool.
Industry analysts suggest that by refining this search experience, YouTube is positioning itself to potentially incorporate sponsored placements within these AI-generated answers, creating new avenues for targeted advertising beyond standard video pre-rolls.
