Apple Wallet Ads Spark Outrage Among iPhone Users – Ankor Tech
Spread the love

iPhone users are expressing widespread frustration after the Apple Wallet app began sending unsolicited push notifications to promote the upcoming film “F1.” The marketing push, which offers a $10 discount at Fandango for bulk ticket purchases, has ignited a wave of backlash across social media and Reddit, as customers criticize the company for turning a core system utility into an advertising channel.

The “F1” Movie Marketing Blitz

The film, which stars Brad Pitt and centers on the high-stakes world of Formula 1, is a significant Apple original production. Apple has leaned heavily into the movie’s synergy with its own technology, highlighting the use of custom-built cameras derived from iPhone components and featuring the protagonist wearing AirPods Max.

User Backlash: “I Did Not Pay $1,000 for Ads”

The intrusion of marketing into the Wallet app has struck a nerve with the Apple user base. One Reddit user, u/captain42d, bluntly stated, “I did not pay over $1000 for an iPhone to get advertised at.” The sentiment is echoed by many who feel that digital utilities should remain free from promotional content.

Currently, users find themselves with limited options to stop these notifications. While the upcoming iOS 26 beta includes a toggle to disable “Offers & Promotions” within the Wallet app, this feature is not yet available in the public release. Users are currently forced to either disable notifications entirely or accept the marketing.

Historical Tensions Over Apple Marketing

This incident has drawn immediate comparisons to Apple’s controversial 2014 decision to automatically push a free U2 album to every iTunes library, a move that still triggers “Bono flashbacks” for long-time users. Apple has a history of facing resistance regarding promotional content, including previous pushback over ads appearing within iOS Settings.

Strategic Aggression

Apple’s commitment to the film’s success is evident. The company recently showcased a haptic trailer and featured the movie prominently during the WWDC 2025 keynote, with cameos from CEO Tim Cook and SVP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi. Despite the high-profile promotion, the integration of these ads into the Wallet app suggests a shift toward more aggressive monetization of the iPhone ecosystem.

Apple has not responded to requests for comment regarding whether they will scale back these notifications following the public outcry.
