Former NFL quarterback and activist Colin Kaepernick is entering the tech arena with the launch of Lumi, an AI-powered storytelling platform designed to help creators reclaim ownership of their narratives. Emerging from stealth mode this Wednesday, the company secured $4 million in seed funding led by Seven Seven Six and is now opening its beta version to the public.
Addressing Media Industry Inefficiencies
Kaepernick’s transition into the startup world is rooted in his decade-long experience building Kaepernick Media and his tenure on Medium’s board of directors. Having navigated the complexities of the media landscape—including issues surrounding gatekeeping, prohibitive production costs, and the frequent loss of creative rights—Kaepernick views Lumi as a necessary solution.
The platform aims to democratize content creation by providing an integrated ecosystem that combines AI-driven production tools, a distribution network, and a revenue-sharing model. While the tech stack is not entirely novel, the implementation targets a specific gap: empowering independent storytellers who have historically been sidelined by traditional media structures.
From Controversy to Creative Control
The motivation behind Lumi is deeply personal. Kaepernick, who faced intense national scrutiny after his 2016 protests against racial injustice, witnessed firsthand how third parties often hijack and reshape an individual’s narrative. “On my own story—the impact and implications of other people creating their narratives around it—why should that be the case?” Kaepernick noted in an interview.
Rather than focusing solely on his own story, the platform is designed to scale this agency to others. The initiative allows creators to focus on the craft while Lumi manages the logistical burdens of publishing and merchandising.
How the Lumi Platform Works
Lumi is launching with a specialized focus on manga and comic book illustration. The workflow is designed to be an end-to-end solution for creators:
- Character Development: Users input descriptions of traits and backstories into an AI model to generate visual character assets.
- Story Planning: The AI assists in structuring plots, defining protagonists and antagonists, and developing cohesive scripts.
- Publishing: Imagery, dialogue, and captions are synthesized into a finished graphic novel, which is then published on the Lumi platform.
Lumi operates on a tiered subscription model, ranging from $20 to $75 per month, with a revenue-sharing structure that compensates creators for digital sales, physical copies, and merchandise.
Silicon Valley Ambitions
While this marks his first venture as a founder, Kaepernick has been an active angel investor since 2017, with over 50 portfolio companies. His time on the board of Medium, alongside industry veterans like Ben Horowitz and Evan Williams, has been instrumental in shaping his approach to business.
Regarding the current political climate in Silicon Valley, Kaepernick remains focused on the product. “If we are serving our end user and creator in the best way possible, then we will have a successful company,” he stated.
A core challenge for the platform will be mitigating the inherent biases found in Large Language Models (LLMs). Kaepernick acknowledges that AI can amplify historical prejudices, stating, “Our hope here is that we build something to create that better path forward for storytellers and creators.”
