Elon Musk has officially announced plans for “Terafab,” a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility designed to supply chips for Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI. Revealed during an event in Austin, Texas, this weekend, the project aims to solve critical supply chain bottlenecks currently hindering his companies’ artificial intelligence and robotics development.
Addressing the Global Chip Shortage
The strategic move comes as Musk expresses frustration with current semiconductor output. According to a Bloomberg report, the facility will be located near Tesla’s Austin headquarters and existing “gigafactory.” Musk’s rationale is blunt: current manufacturers cannot keep pace with the massive demand for specialized hardware.
“We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab,” Musk stated during the presentation.
Ambitious Computing Targets
The Terafab project is set to operate on an unprecedented scale. Musk outlined a production goal of 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power annually for Earth-based applications, with a secondary objective of producing a terawatt of computing power specifically for operations in space.

While the vision for Terafab is expansive, the project faces significant scrutiny. Musk has not provided a concrete timeline for construction or production, and industry experts point to his lack of experience in semiconductor fabrication as a primary hurdle.
