GRAI Raises $9M to Make AI Music Social, Not Replace Artists – Ankor Tech

Music tech startup GRAI has secured $9 million in seed funding to redefine how consumers interact with music through artificial intelligence. Unlike generative AI platforms such as Suno or Udio, which focus on creating songs from scratch, GRAI is betting on the social potential of music by allowing users to remix, restyle, and share tracks with friends.

Bridging the Gap Between Fans and Creators

Founded by the team behind the Pinterest-acquired video app Vochi, GRAI is positioning itself as a “creator-first” platform. CEO Ilya Liasun argues that the music industry currently suffers from broken discovery mechanisms, passive consumption, and a lack of social context. Instead of aiming to replace artists with synthetic audio, the company intends to provide tools that let fans participate in the musical process legally.

The startup is currently testing its vision through dedicated mobile applications, including Music with friends for iOS and an AI music playground for Android. These tools serve as a sandbox for Gen Z and Gen Alpha users, who primarily discover music through community-driven platforms like TikTok.

Prioritizing Artist Consent and Royalties

A central pillar of GRAI’s strategy is its “derivatives pipeline.” By developing proprietary infrastructure, the company allows for real-time audio transformation that preserves the identity of original tracks. Crucially, Liasun emphasizes that GRAI is negotiating with labels and artists to ensure this activity is authorized, rather than building first and seeking permission later.

The long-term goal is to establish a system where artists can opt in or out of these interactions, potentially unlocking new streams of royalty payments. “We don’t want to share new GenAI slop with streaming services,” Liasun states. “We actually focus on the interaction part.”

Investment and Future Scaling

The $9 million seed round was co-led by Khosla Ventures and Inovo VC. Other participants include Tiny.VC, Flyer One Ventures, the a16z Scout Fund, and several prominent angel investors, including former executives from Snap, Pinterest, and Rhapsody. The company, led by co-founders Ilya Liasun, Dima Kamarouski, and Andrei Avsievich, plans to use this capital to refine its infrastructure and expand its reach beyond traditional streaming platforms.

By prioritizing user feedback and building a collaborative framework for rights holders, GRAI hopes to transform music from a static media file into a dynamic, social, and participatory experience.
