India’s mobile app ecosystem is experiencing an unprecedented revenue surge, with in-app purchases soaring to over $300 million in the first quarter of 2026—a 33% year-over-year increase. Despite this rapid financial growth, a significant portion of consumer spending is being captured by global tech giants rather than domestic developers, according to the latest data from Sensor Tower.

Non-Gaming Apps Drive Revenue Surge

The growth in Q1 was primarily fueled by non-gaming applications, which generated more than $200 million in revenue—a 44% spike compared to the previous year. This shift highlights a changing landscape where productivity tools, video streaming services, and generative AI platforms are leading the charge in monetization.

The broader trajectory for the Indian market is aggressive. Annual in-app purchase revenue has climbed from $520 million in 2021 to over $1 billion in 2025, with projections hitting $1.25 billion by the end of this year. While total annual downloads have plateaued at approximately 25 billion, the time spent within apps is rising, signaling deeper user engagement and a higher propensity to pay for digital services.

Global Platforms vs. Local Players

The revenue leaderboard is currently dominated by international powerhouses. Google One, Facebook, ChatGPT, and YouTube remain the top earners in the region. However, domestic players maintain a strong foothold in the video streaming sector, with JioHotstar and Sony LIV securing prominent rankings.

A similar trend appears in download volume. While ChatGPT, Instagram, and the Chinese short-drama app FreeReels lead the market, Indian applications such as Story TV, JioHotstar, and Meesho continue to attract a massive user base.

Market Maturation and Future Potential

Donny Kristianto, principal market insights manager at Sensor Tower, notes that while the download market has reached maturity, monetization is evolving as digital payment habits become ingrained in daily life. Despite this progress, India remains a low-spending market compared to its peers, generating roughly $0.03 in revenue per download. For context, Southeast Asia and Latin America average over $0.20 per download.

Emerging Trends in AI and Entertainment

Growth is increasingly concentrated in mature segments like social media and productivity, but new categories are beginning to disrupt the status quo:

  • Generative AI: Downloads for AI-focused apps surged 69% year-over-year, with ChatGPT consistently ranking as a top performer in both installs and revenue.
  • Short-Form Drama: This category is witnessing explosive growth, with downloads up more than 400%, led by platforms like FreeReels.

These shifts indicate that India is still in the early stages of its monetization journey. As users expand their willingness to pay for diverse digital experiences, the competitive landscape between global platforms and local innovators is expected to intensify further.
