Reality star and aspiring lawyer Kim Kardashian has labeled ChatGPT her “frenemy” after the AI tool provided inaccurate information that led her to fail legal exams. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Kardashian revealed she frequently uses the platform to assist with her ongoing legal studies, often with disastrous results.
The Pitfalls of AI-Powered Legal Research
Kardashian explained her process of using the chatbot as a study aid: “I use ChatGPT for legal advice, so when I am needing to know the answer to a question, I will take a picture and snap it and put it in there. They’re always wrong. It has made me fail tests.”
The issue stems from the tendency of Large Language Models (LLMs) to “hallucinate.” Instead of admitting a lack of knowledge, these systems often generate plausible-sounding but entirely fabricated information. This behavior is not unique to Kardashian’s experience; the legal industry has already seen professionals face sanctions for submitting legal briefs that cite non-existent court cases generated by AI.
Emotional Battles with Non-Sentient Tech
Despite knowing the technology lacks consciousness, Kardashian admits to engaging in heated, one-sided arguments with the AI. When the tool provides incorrect data, she frequently confronts it, asking, “Hey, you’re going to make me fail, how does that make you feel that you need to really know these answers?”
The AI’s programmed, diplomatic responses—often suggesting that the errors are merely “teaching you to trust your own instincts”—only serve to frustrate her further. “I’ll get mad and I’ll yell at it and be like, ‘You made me fail!'” she added.
Sharing the Frustration
While the AI remains indifferent to these interactions, Kardashian has found a way to externalize her annoyance. She frequently screenshots the chatbot’s more infuriating responses to share with friends. “I screenshot all the time and send it to my group chat, like, ‘Can you believe this b— is talking to me like this?'” she noted, highlighting the increasingly complex and often absurd relationship humans are developing with generative AI tools.
