Reddit has officially launched a mandatory age verification system for users in the United Kingdom. This strategic move aims to restrict minors from accessing inappropriate and harmful material, ensuring the platform aligns with the strict requirements of the U.K.’s Online Safety Act (OSA).
Compliance With the UK Online Safety Act
The implementation of these measures follows the introduction of the Online Safety Act, which mandates that digital platforms take decisive steps to protect children from encountering dangerous content. Under the new guidelines, Reddit is required to implement robust age assurance methods to block access to sensitive material, including pornography, content promoting self-harm, and other potentially damaging interactions.
How the Verification Process Works
To facilitate this transition, Reddit has partnered with the third-party service Persona. Users will be prompted to verify their age by submitting a photograph of a government-issued identity document or a selfie. Addressing privacy concerns, Reddit confirmed that it will not store these identity images. Instead, the platform will only retain the user’s verification status and their date of birth.
Content Restrictions for Minors
Once the verification protocols are active, users identified as under 18 will be restricted from accessing specific categories of content. According to official Reddit guidelines, this includes:
- Sexually explicit posts;
- Material encouraging suicide or disordered eating;
- Content promoting hate speech based on race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, disability, or gender.
Privacy Concerns and Industry Trends
The move has reignited a broader debate regarding digital privacy. Critics have consistently warned of significant security risks inherent in private companies collecting and storing massive databases of sensitive identity documents. Despite these concerns, social media platforms are increasingly adopting such measures to satisfy regional regulations; notably, Bluesky recently announced similar verification requirements for its U.K. user base to maintain compliance with the updated OSA standards.
