Trump and China Reach TikTok Deal: What We Know So Far – Ankor Tech

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Chinese President Xi Jinping has officially approved a deal to restructure TikTok’s U.S. operations. This agreement aims to transition the platform to a consortium of American investors, effectively resolving a prolonged geopolitical standoff that threatened to ban the app nationwide.

The Path to a TikTok U.S. Resolution

The announcement follows months of intense negotiations between Washington and Beijing regarding the future of the video-sharing giant. TikTok had faced a potential ban since January over national security concerns, though the Trump administration repeatedly paused enforcement following significant backlash from millions of American users and content creators.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed the breakthrough, stating, “The call was a very good one, we will be speaking again by phone, appreciate the TikTok approval.”

Ownership Structure and Governance

While official documentation remains pending, reports from the Wall Street Journal indicate that the proposed deal establishes a new U.S.-based entity. Under the current framework, American investors—including Oracle, Silver Lake, and Andreessen Horowitz—are slated to hold an 80% stake in the U.S. business, with Chinese shareholders retaining the remaining 20%.

Governance of the new entity will be heavily weighted toward the U.S., with a board comprised primarily of American members. Notably, the agreement includes a provision for one board seat to be appointed directly by the U.S. government, ensuring ongoing oversight of the platform’s operations.

Corporate Response from ByteDance

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, released a formal public statement acknowledging the development. The company expressed gratitude toward both President Xi and President Trump for their intervention in preserving the app’s presence in the United States.

“ByteDance will work in accordance with applicable laws to ensure TikTok remains available to American users through TikTok U.S.,” the statement noted. Despite these assurances, specific operational details regarding how the transition will be executed remain limited as both parties finalize the logistics of the agreement.
