for offline viewing and listen to videos in the background, even when the screen is locked or while multitasking in other applications.
Originally launched last March, YouTube Premium Lite was designed as a cost-effective alternative to the $13.99/month full subscription. While the Lite plan removes advertisements from most videos across categories like gaming, news, and beauty, it does not include an ad-free experience for music content, nor does it provide access to the YouTube Music app.
Expanding Global Reach
After debuting in Thailand, Germany, and Australia, the Lite tier expanded to the United States and is currently available across a variety of international markets, including Canada, Brazil, the U.K., India, Mexico, and several regions throughout Europe and Asia.
Monetization and Growth Trends
The strategic update arrives as Alphabet reports robust financial growth for the platform. During the Q4 earnings call, the company revealed that YouTube’s total revenue reached $60 billion in 2025. Specifically, ad revenue saw a 9% increase, totaling $11.38 billion for the quarter.
The “subscriptions, platforms, and devices” segment experienced a 17% surge, reaching $13.6 billion. Alphabet attributes this significant uptick to the rapid adoption of YouTube Music and YouTube Premium. As of March 2025, the company surpassed 125 million users for its music and premium services combined, contributing to a broader ecosystem of over 325 million paid subscriptions across all consumer services, including Google One.
With these new perks, the Lite tier has become a much stronger competitor for users who prioritize video playback features over an ad-free music streaming experience.
